Proselytizing

Since Eckankar focuses so heavily on religious and spiritual freedom for all people, proselytizing is discouraged. In the interest of “giving freedom to other’s spiritually,” says Alice, it is not up to ECKists to push Eckankar on anyone else. John, the tour guide, mentioned that ECKists do put posters and flyers on bulletin boards—but only with the explicit permission of the owner of the space. As John wanted to make clear, “We’re not Jehovah’s Witnesses, we don’t proselytize.” Because of its unique conception of Soul as the root of life and existence, Eckankar understands death not as a finality, but rather as part of the process of spiritual knowledge.
