Maple Grove Demographics

The City of Maple Grove estimates 63,000 people lived within its city limits in 2009. In 1990, the population was only 38,868. It grew to 50,365 by 2000 and by another 10,000 over the past nine years. In other words, Maple Grove’s annual growth rate between 2000 and 2009 was an astounding 30%. In comparison, Hennepin County’s growth rate between 2000 and 2009 was 3.3% (1) and Minnesota’s growth rate was only 6.1% between 2007 and 2008 (2). The national growth rate was only 1.10% between 1990 and 2000 (1). Maple Grove’s defining characteristic seems to be its rapid growth.

The 2005-9 Census American Community Survey estimates, the median household income ($92,141) in Maple Grove is almost twice the national average ($51,425), the Hennepin County average ($61,387) and the Minnesota average ($57,007). Only 1.9% of families are below the poverty level, compared to 9.9% nationwide, 7.1% in Hennepin County and 6.4% in Minnesota. In other words, Maple Grove is undeniably “upper middle class” relative to Hennepin County, Minnesota as a whole or even the entire nation. (1)

Maple Grove’s 62,000 residents are predominantly white (94.3%). The proportion of residents who identify as Black or African is less than in Hennepin county and the national average, but on par with Minnesota’s. On the other hand, a similar percentage of the Maple Grove, Hennepin county, and national population identify as Asian.

28% of the population identified their ancestry as German, 12% as Norwegian and 6% as Swedish and 3% as Polish. Sizable groups also identified their ancestry as Russian, Ukrainian, Irish and Czech (2).

Only 84 people in Maple Grove identify as Native American and 34 identify as American Hawaiian. In other words, both categories barely compose 0.1% of the Maple Grove population, as they do in Hennepin county, Minnesota and nationwide (1).

In short, Maple Grove’s racial makeup is not representative of America's, Minnesota's or Hennepin county's demographic profiles. It lacks the larger Black population of Hennepin County and the United States and has a much more prominent White population than either.

The median age in Maple Grove is 36.6, 72.2% of the population is more than 18 years old and 6% is 65 or older. These numbers are similar to Hennepin County, Minnesota and national measures.

More than 48% of people over the age of 25 have attended college. 96.9% hold a high school diploma. These percentages are similar to Hennepin County and Minnesota’s, but vastly exceed national averages. The local high school ranks among the top 100 in the state, with consistently high test scores.

Employment
Major employers include Boston Scientific and the local school district, and unemployment and poverty rates are surprisingly low; the city doesn’t contain a single mobile home, and a scant 1.5% of the population lives below the poverty line.
