Formally, it is a branch of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha, which is a Hindu school founded in 1917 in what is now Bangladesh. The school was established by Swami Pranavananda ji Maharaj, a spiritual ascetic whose followers believe to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The Bharat Sevashram Sangha was created to spread the teachings of Guru Maharaj; his teachings emphasized the development of an intimate relationship with God, and the realization that the divine power rests within each living being, not just sacred objects. Swami Maharaj also preached spiritual development through self-meditation and selfless service and at Milan Mandir he is worshiped as a divine guru.
