Drugs, Alcohol, Disorders, and Illnesses

Drugs/Alcohol

Eckankar’s stance on the use of drugs and alcohol is clear. Klemp writes, “[Smoking, drinking, etc.] riddles your aura with holes, to allow negative currents in. It destroys good judgment”1  and that, “[Those who use drugs] use them to escape boredom, and boredom itself is a crime against the creative power of Soul.”2

Disorders and Illnesses

Most of our illnesses, though, are from something we’ve done in the past.

In conjunction with Eckankar’s teachings on the centrality of karma in life, Eckankar holds the position that “most of our illnesses, though, are from something we’ve done in the past.”3 Eckankar encourages those in need to actively seek whatever medical assistance, physical or mental, may be necessary. In response to a question about eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, Harold Klemp, in Youth Ask a Modern Prophet About Life, Love, and God, writes, “I suggest you read The Healing Power of Illness: The Meaning of Symptoms and How to Interpret Them by Thorwald Dethlefson and Rudiger Dahlke, M.D.”4
